ADOPTION FAQ
Before You Adopt
Expectations
Shelter pets aren’t perfect from day one. Many were surrendered due to lack of training or care, and they’ll need patience as they adjust. It can take up to three months for a pet to feel fully comfortable at home. Be ready to continue training, set routines, and give them time to settle in.
Finances
Plan for the cost of food, preventatives, and veterinary care—often over $1,000 per year per pet. Adoption fees cover only part of their medical care at the shelter, including spay/neuter, vaccines, preventatives, and microchipping. All ongoing costs are your responsibility.
Commitment
Pets can live 12–20 years. They need daily attention and companionship. If your lifestyle doesn’t allow time for a pet, adoption may not be the right choice right now.
