Planned Giving

Make an Everlasting Impact with a Future Gift

You can help secure ACSKC’s future through a planned gift.  ACSKC will always serve the people of Kent County, Maryland, and their pets through adoptions, veterinary care, educational programming, and lost and found pet reunions.  As a pet lover, you will be instrumental in sustaining our mission and helping us plan for our future.

We encourage our friends with planned gifts for ACSKC to let us know to ensure your intentions for your future gift are honored.  Please contact Richard Keaveney, Executive Director, at rkeaveney@acskc.org.

Include ACSKC in Your Plans

There are many ways to benefit the animals at ACSKC as you make your legacy giving plans:

  • Name the Animal Care Shelter for Kent County (ACSKC) as a beneficiary in a Will or Living Trust
  • Make a gift of cash or appreciated securities to establish a charitable gift annuity for ACSKC
  • Name ACSKC as the beneficiary of a paid life insurance policy or a retirement account
  • Create a charitable remainder trust (CRT) and name ACSKC as the beneficiary
  • When planning your IRA withdrawal strategy, consider donating through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).

Qualified Charitable Distributions from a Traditional IRA

Normally, distributions from a traditional individual retirement arrangement (IRA) are taxable when received. With a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), however, these distributions become tax-free as long as they’re paid directly from the IRA to an eligible charitable organization. Each year, an IRA owner age 70 ½ or over can exclude from gross income up to $100,000 of these QCDs. For a married couple, if both spouses are age 70 ½ or over and both have IRAs, each spouse can exclude up to $100,000 for a total of up to $200,000 per year. For those who are at least 73, QCDs count toward the IRA owner’s required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year.

Contact your financial advisor or IRA custodian for assistance.

Are you 70 1/2 or older?

The law allows you to donate to us from a retirement account with special Federal tax treatment!

"Why Should I Make a Charitable Bequest?"

When you name a charity as a beneficiary to receive your IRA or other retirement assets upon your death, there are several potential benefits:

  • Neither you, your heirs, nor your estate will pay income taxes on the distribution of the assets.
  • Your estate will need to include the value of the assets as part of the gross estate but will receive a tax deduction for the charitable contribution, which can be used to offset the estate taxes.
  • Because charities do not pay income tax, the full amount of your retirement account will directly benefit the charity of your choice.
  • It’s possible to divide your retirement assets between charities and heirs according to any percentages you choose.
  • You have the opportunity to support a cause you care about as part of your legacy.

As always, tax benefits depend on each individual’s unique circumstances, and you should always consult with your attorney, advisor and/or accountant before using any of these methods.
